“Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one” ~Bruce Lee
Have you ever stopped to think about what you want to face in life? Would you prefer a life filled with obstacles—an uphill journey through a thicket of thorns? Or would you prefer an easy life—a road paved with gold where the simple thought of a wish concludes in its attainment?
Some of you might think that you want the easy life. But I believe if you were to truly stop and think about it, you’d quickly change your mind. In life, achievements are created through adversity.
Adversity brings value.
Imagine a scenario in which whenever you wanted to have something you could simply wish it out loud and you’d obtain it in the blink of an eye.
The hottest boyfriend or girlfriend. Done!
A brand-new Ferrari with all of the latest tech. Yours!
Your ideal home in the Hollywood hills and your favorite people staying with you. All yours!
Sounds great, right? But what happens when you run out of wishes?
Do you think you’ll be happy?
Probably not. In fact, I’d venture to say that the opposite would be true. You’d probably find yourself a bit depressed.
But how could that be? You have everything you could ever want and more!
So lies the problem. You have EVERYTHING! But you didn’t earn it. You can’t truly appreciate what you have because it’s extremely disposable. It’s much easier to appreciate things that are scarcely available.
When you face challenges and tackle adversity you remember your struggles. The struggles give the reward meaning. Your satisfaction comes from a combination of the struggle and the result.

Still don’t believe me? Consider this scenario.
Picture yourself wherever you are right now. You’re on earth. Not crazy yet, right?
You can breathe, of course. How often do you think about breathing? How frequently do you consider your supply of oxygen?
I’d assume not much (well maybe now you’re manual breathing because you’re thinking about it).
Now, imagine you had to go into space for some reason but an accident occurs during the trip. You’re now stranded in space and your oxygen supply is severely limited.
Scary, right? Suddenly, your air is scarce. Every breath you take leads you closer to your last.
I bet suddenly you’d appreciate the abundance of oxygen you had on earth. Keep in mind, when you were on earth you probably rarely thought about oxygen. And when you did, you probably seldom appreciated that without it, you’d die.
Well, because there’s less value in it. Typically, it’s everywhere. It’s available all of the time.
Apply this to anything in life. Don’t try to avoid challenges or adversity. Welcome it. Hope that when a challenge arises, you’re prepared to combat it.
Think about the quote above and not only wish for the strength to endure a difficult life but also embrace the difficult life. With adversity comes growth. And with growth comes success.
